Barbecue sauce within minutes from your cupboard
Sometimes it's the small things that make a big difference: a piece of jewelry or a simple gesture to a friend. Food can get a certain pizzazz from a condiment. In fact some foods aren't the same without some punch of flavor from a sauce, spread, or topping. Take hot dogs for instance. Most people don't eat naked dogs. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the sustenance of many children, is simply two condiments slathered between slices of bread.
When you are cooking for one person, you may roll your eyes at buying an entire bottle of a condiment you want. You think to yourself, what will I do with the rest of it? You know what happens. Another bottle is added to the long-forgotten artillery of sauces and spreads in the refrigerator door shelves.
Barbecue sauce is the condiment of summertime. There are lots of brands and varieties of barbecue sauce out there. If you get a hankering for some barbecue sauce but don't want to have to go buy some just for a couple of tablespoons of sauce, then here's a simple recipe for barbecue sauce for one person.
You can make a quick, makeshift barbecue sauce by looking at some of the things you have in your pantry or refrigerator. One caveat, it won't have a smoky flavor unless you add some liquid smoke flavoring to it (most single people don't have this lingering around their kitchen).
Equipment needed:
- 1 small bowl
- 1 spoon
- measuring cups and spoons
Ingredients needed:
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon prepared mustard (yellow kind in bottle, not powdered kind)
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon brown sugar (don't substitute white sugar)
- 1 teaspoon vinegar (preferably apple cider vinegar if you have it)
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (or onion flakes)
- hot sauce (optional to your taste)
How to make it:
Just mix the ingredients together in the bowl (besides the hot sauce). Taste and adjust to your liking. If you're using the hot sauce, it's best to add a little and taste as you go. Once you add it, you can't take it out!
There are advantages to this make-at-a-moment's-notice barbecue sauce for one person.
It is made fresh each time, so you don't have half a bottle of sauce languishing in the fridge until its anniversary.
It is highly customizable. You can make it spicier (more chili powder), sweeter (more brown sugar), or tangier (more vinegar). If you adjust any of the ingredients, add a little bit at a time and taste after you add it.
You are economically using other ingredients you have on hand that will multi-task in different meals. In other words, less wasted food in the fridge.
Recipe Ideas
You can use this sauce like any other barbecue sauce. It is great on a piece of chicken. Mix it with shredded, leftover cooked chicken. Top off a pork chop. It is even good dabbed on burger.
Have a barbecue ham sandwich for a lip-smackin' lunch. Take some good quality, sliced deli ham and mix enough sauce to lightly coat the ham slices.
Warm up the ham in a small skillet on the stove or in a microwave-safe container. Slide the BBQ ham in between an awaiting bun or slices of bread. Add a pickle and some crunchy veggies on the side, and you got yourself a quick, filling summer lunch!
